Part of the brilliance behind the growth of Facebook is that they've very successfully reached beyond their destination site and have created a presence on millions of other sites of all sizes. These sites use pre-written Facebook tools to increase their Facebook following, and improve the functionality of their sites for their audience. These tools include the following:
- The Facebook share button. Pretty much every major social network has something like this. You can place the share button on pages in your own site where you showcase content or products, and people can simply click it to share the content (along with a link back to your site) with their network of friends on Facebook.
- The Like button. If you have a Facebook fan page for your online company (did you read the first tip in this section? You need a fan page!), this tool will enable people to “like” it right from your site. Plus, it'll show thumbnails of other people who have liked the page (including their own friends, if their friends also like your site). In addition, if you want, it will display the last few posts you've made on Facebook so people will know the kind of info they'll be getting if they decide to like your page.
- Comments. If you have posts on your site that you want to allow people to comment on, you can easily install a commenting system by using Facebook's commenting tool. The exciting part is that although this tool isn't SEO friendly (I'll talk more about SEO toward the end of this part), when a site visitor leaves a comment using this tool, that comment also shows up on their Facebook wall by default (along with a link back to your site, for their Facebook network to see).
