LA Weight Loss Program

Definition

The LA Weight Loss program is a diet plan that was formerly based in weight loss centers located throughout the United States but is now almost entirely online. The program sells nutritional supplements and food items that are delivered to subscribers' homes.

Origins

The LA Weight Loss Centers company was founded by Vahan Karian in 1989. It began as a privately held company and remains so today. The company grew very quickly; in 1994 there were 18 LA Weight Loss Centers, and by 2006 there were more than 800. By the late 2010s, however, the company had closed its physical centers and transitioned entirely to an online platform. Subscribers can sign up to receive regular deliveries of LA Weight Loss–branded food products and supplements.

Description

LA Weight Loss is currently an online program that focuses mainly on selling LA Weight Loss–branded products. Customers subscribe to one of three programs: platinum, gold, or silver. Each program delivers customers a monthly supply of nutritional supplements and LA Bars, the program's official snack, which is claimed to help dieters keep cravings for sweets at bay. The company also offers portion control and weight loss tools, such as a monthly food diary and a food scale.

The company advertises a three-part success system. The first part is the LA menu plan, which aims to teach new eating habits. LA Weight Loss encourages customers to eat three meals a day plus snacks to stay full and satisfied and to keep metabolism burning high. The website contains numerous recipes that customers can use to make approved dishes. The second part consists of LA Bars, which are meant to keep cravings in check. The bars come in different flavors. The third part is LA Nutritionals, supplements meant to help customers feel full and burn more fat.

Customers pass through three phases, depending on where they are in their weight loss progress. Phase 1 is a weight loss phase. In this phase, LA Weight Loss helps clients set weight loss goals and designs custom menu plans. Phase 2 is weight loss stabilization, during which customers add more variety to their meals. Phase 3 is weight loss maintenance, which ideally is meant to be permanent.

One of the hallmarks of LA Weight Loss Centers has been celebrity endorsements. In television and print commercials, as well as through its website and other promotional materials, celebrities have partnered with the company and promoted its message. The list of celebrities includes actress Whoopi Goldberg, actor Steve Harvey, Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid, Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka, and former NFL greats Ron Jaworski, Jim Kelly, Joe Greene, Ed Jones, and Dan Dierdorf.

A nutrient that the body needs in small amounts to remain healthy but that the body cannot manufacture for itself and must acquire through diet.

The company began closing its physical diet centers in 2010. Many former customers reportedly lost money when their local centers closed, resulting in a loss of customers for some years.

Function

LA Weight Loss generates weight loss through portion control and reduced calories. It is intended to provide support and guidance to those who want to lose weight and maintain good health. The current online version does this with a heavy emphasis on purchasing LA Weight Loss food items and nutritional supplements, which are claimed to help accelerate weight loss.

Benefits

There are many benefits to losing weight, being healthy, and getting fit. The benefits of weight loss can be very significant, as many diseases and disorders, such as diabetes, are associated with being obese and having high levels of insulin and insulin resistance. Generally, the more overweight a person is and the greater his or her degree of insulin resistance, the greater the risk is for these diseases. Weight loss can reduce the risk of obesity-related diseases. Increased exercise can also reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and improve overall health.

Precautions

Anyone thinking of beginning a new diet or exercise program should consult a doctor or an other medical practitioner. Requirements for calories, fat, and nutrients can differ from person to person, depending on gender, age, weight, and many other factors, such as the presence of any diseases or conditions. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should be especially cautious because they may need increased amounts of vitamins and minerals, and deficiencies can be harmful for the baby. Exercising too strenuously or beginning a rigorous exercise program too suddenly can lead to an increased risk of injury.

The LA Weight Loss program is expensive. The only way to participate in it is to purchase online monthly subscriptions that involve automatic delivery of the branded products. It is possible to adopt many of the program's principles without subscribing, because much of the program simply involves meticulous attention to portion size, recording food consumption in a journal, and regular weight checks.

Risks

With any diet and exercise plan, there are some risks. It can be difficult for a dieter to get enough vitamins and minerals when eating a limited diet. Anyone beginning a diet may want to consult his or her physician about whether taking a vitamin or supplement might help reduce this risk. Following proper warm-up and cool-down procedures can help to minimize the risk of injury during exercise. It may be recommended that a dieter begin with light or moderate exercise and slowly increase the intensity of the exercise over weeks or months.

The LA Weight Loss program involves the purchase and consumption of a large amount of prepackaged processed foods and nutritional supplements. Those who are interested in getting most of their nutrition from natural foods might not want to consume so much processed food. Supplements have their own risks and possibilities of side effects.

The LA Weight Loss plan is generally expected to include some form of exercise plan. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that healthy adults get at least 30 minutes a day of light-to-moderate exercise. Because each dieter has a personalized plan, it is not possible to determine if this minimum recommendation is met. Exercise is a very important part of a healthy lifestyle and has been shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Studies have shown that weight loss is achieved more effectively with programs that combine diet and exercise than programs that focus on just one.
